A modern group of four medals including the scarce Rhodesia Medal 1980, consisting of: General Service Medal 1962 with clasp ‘Northern Ireland’ named to:
24285224 Sig T McGreevy R Signals, the UN Service Medal for UNFICYP (United Nations Force In Cyprus) and the Rhodesia Medal 1980 named to: 24285224 Sig T
McGreevy R Signals. A total of 996 army personnel received the Rhodesia medal, 132 to officers and 864
to other ranks. A number were also awarded to RAF, civilian and police recipients, bringing the overall total awarded to approximately 1,500. The medal was issued
named to servicemen but un-named to civilians and police. Of the Army recipients, the largest allocation went to the Royal Signals who received 8 to officers and 195
to other ranks. The next highest allocations were 15 and 71 to the Royal Artillery, 10
and 76 to the Royal Engineers, and 2 and 70 to the REME. Infantry Battalions
typically received up to around 30 each. The Blues and Royals received 1 - to a Lieutenant Colonel A H Parker - Bowles! The qualification was fourteen days in
theatre. Signalman McGreevy would have been a member of the contingent sent by 30th Signal Regiment (Strategic Reserve) to provide the vital communications
network for Operation AGILA, during which the Rhodesian insurgent forces were
‘brought in’ and surrendered their weapons as a precursor to the creation of the state
of Zimbabwe. The group mounted as worn and accompanied by the Zimbabwe Independence
Medal which was permitted to be accepted, but not worn in uniform, by British service personnel.
