Franz Barwig the elderly, father of Franz Barwig the younger, was one of the most important Austrian sculptors at the time of Art Nouveau. Barwig attended the arts and crafts school in Vienna with Hermann Klotz in 1888-1897. From 1890 he worked freelance. In 1904 he taught at the technical school for wood processing in Villach, in 1908 he worked in the teaching center office of the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry in Vienna and participated in the design of the anniversary festival to the 60th anniversary of the government of Emperor Franz Joseph. He dealt with the art of Vienna Secession and essentially remained loyal to the Secessionist style. From 1909 to 1921 Barwig was a professor of sculpture at the Vienna School of Art. Afterwards he lived as a freelance artist in Vienna and worked u. For the ceramos of Vienna. From 1925 to 1927 he stayed in the USA, where on behalf of the architect Josef Maria Urban, he carried out the plastic design of the Mar-A-Lago, which belongs today in Palm Beach, Florida. He has been a member of the Hagenbund since 1906 and the Vienna Secession since 1925. After his return from America, Barwig was no longer able to integrate himself into the domestic art scene and died in 1931 by suicide. He was buried in the Neustifter cemetery. Franz Barwig's students included The image carver Jakob Löw, the sculptor Otto Zirnbauer and Max Domenig.
