JOHN GLOVER OWCS (1767-1849). An extensive wooded valley landscape with buildings under trees, watercolour, unframed, 11 x 15 1/2 in.

Provenance: From a deceased Estate, Lugwardine, Herefordshire

This previously unattributed watercolour displays a number of characteristics of Glover's technique and style. For the present attribution cf. a pencil drawing by Glover depicting a comparable composition cf. a pencil drawing depicting a cottage in a wooded valley titled Dacre, Cumbria c.1814, offered for auction at Lawsons, 4th January 2021. For another watercolour depicting a similar treatment of trees, foliage and foreground cf. A View of Bayham Abbey, Kent, Christie's, London 5 July 2022 lot 115. For a similar dispersal of light on the distant area of landscape (a characteristic trait of his work) cf. Cattle by Ruins in the Highlands', Shapiro 22nd November 2022 Lot 144.

In 1792 Glover set up as an itinerant drawing master. In 1795 he started to exhibit paintings at The Royal Academy, his work at the time being favourably compared to those of Turner.

In 1807 Glover was elected President of the Society of watercolours. Although he was never elected an RA, he remained well patronised until the late 1820's when his popularity began to wane. In 1831 he departed from England for Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania).
