£3,000
JANSZ ISAAC VAN OSTADE (Dutch, 1622-1649) Portrait of an elderly man, three-quarter length, sitting smoking a clay pipe, beside a table, oil on panel, signed to upper right, the panel with red wax seal and paper labels, indistinctly inscribed, two further labels numbered 381 and 35312, initialled A, 16cm x 15cm. See illustration
The original panel has been edged with later oak fillets, the top one is missing. When viewed closely from the front, a line is visible where each fillet meets the panel; this has been painted to blend in with the panel. Which has slipped slightly in the frame and exposed the area. The surface is covered in very fine bubbles. To left of lower middle there is a line indentation approximately 2cm long. The hat looks as if it has been over painted under UV.
Provenance - lots 405 & 406 are both from the same estate of an elderly lady who lived in Sheffield. We first saw the paintings last year since when she has passed away. Her estate included a painting by John Thomas Serres and other fine items, retained by the family.
