Condition G.V.F. (edge bruise under last two letters of surname, pawn brokers mark near suspender)
John Barnes attested for the Leicestershire regiment on 7th January 1874, he saw service in Afghanistan with the 1st battalion and was present at the battle of Ali Musjid on 21st November 1878. Barnes was discharged at York on 26th December 1885.
