Japanese black and gold lacquered slip top calling card case, late Meiji (1868-1912), decorated with quail and insects in gold lacquer against a black ground, 11cm x 7.5cm; also an early 19th Century engraved pearl hinged top calling card case, circa 1830, detailed with a bird perched amidst branches and a sailing boat on distant seas, 10cm x 7.5cm (2)

The mother-of-pearl case has some small losses to the extremities. There is a crack on the face of the case which has been cleverly engraved into the decoration. The hinge is good and the case closes crisply.
The Japanese case has some wear to the lacquer at the extremities. There are surface scratches and wear to the raised surfaces of the gold lacquer. Some chipping to the lacquer on the lower edges of the slip top.
