Guy Burch added: Scented ink goes way back to Tang Dynasty China (618-907 AS), was supplied in sticks of fine charcoal or lampblack mixed with animal glue. The sticks were rubbed on a stone with drops of water to be used with a brush rather than a pen. The animal glue had an unpleasant smell so musk, turmeric or camphor were added to mask it. Some suggest adding scent to liquid inks originated in Italy but France, synonymous in most peoples mind with perfumery, is where it took off. This rare set, in original box with crescent stoppers, complete with promotional instructions, are marked only on the labels with a fouled anchor and the letter S. Extremely rare. NR.
