Jan van Gool (Dutch, 1685-1763) Arcadian landscape with a laurel-crowned shepherdess and cattle; a drover with his herd and travellers by a stream; a pair one signed JVGool lower left oil on panel each 42 x 60.5cm (2). Provenance: By repute, formerly at Kitley House, Yealmpton Jan van Gool trained in the workshop of Simon van der Does and, while he went on to gain some success as a landscape painter in Holland and also England, he became best-known as an art critic and writer, publishing his collection of artists' biographies, the Nieuw Schouburg, in 1750. A composition closely related to the first of these two arcadian scenes, with a couple cavorting and cattle resting to their right, is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (acc. no. SK-C-133).
