The S.S. Queen Wilhelmina, built by Sir James Laing, Sunderland in 1898 and owned at the time of her loss by Furness, Withy & Co. Ltd., Sunderland, was a British steamer of 3,590 tons and had a cruising speed of 12 knots. On May 8th, 1915 on a voyage from Leith to Fowey in ballast, she was torpedoed by the German submarine U9 (the submarine infamous for torpedoing the three cruisers Hogue, Abokir and Cressy in September 1914), 20 miles off Longstone (off Blyth). She was subsequently beached at Bondicarr and declared a total constructive loss. There were no casualties.
