RUPERT SHEPHARD (1909-1992). CAPE TOWN WOMEN, c.1960. (d) Signed, oil on canvas 74.5 x 49.5cm. * This was painted when the artist was Professor and Director at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town, a post he took up in 1948 and partly influenced by his wife, Lorna, being South African. Shephard was inspired by the vibrant colours and strong light of Cape Town and its environs: his subject matter, palette and technique were all altered by his new lifestyle. He showed his work in South African galleries throughout the 1950s and also at the Venice Biennale. Provenance: By descent in the family of the artist.
Scattered paint losses across composition, but notably upper right and lower left.
