Max Ackermann (German, 1887-1975)
Abstract Composition in Blue
1962
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated 'Ackermann 62' lower right
Max Ackermann (1887-1975) was an important German painter and pioneer of abstract art who was associated with many of the most famous artists of the early 20th century, including members of Der Blaue Reiter, Georg Grosz, Otto Dix, and Erich Heckel. He painted both abstract and figurative works, moving to a purely abstract style in his later years, from the 1940s onwards. Considered a ‘Degenerate Artist’ by the Nazi regime, he joined an artist’s colony Lake Constance which included Dix and Heckel.
This work exemplifies his later style, which was characterised by abstract-geometric compositions. Ackermann was preoccupied with the idea of Gesamtkunstwerk, especially with combining music and art, and his paintings often included references to music within them.
