A fine French cannon dial, 'time gun' or Canon de Midi, J-G-A Chevallier, Paris, c1842-1848, the statuary marble dial engraved for latitude 50° 54, hour scale and inscribed L'INGR CHEVALLIER OPTICIEN DU ROI PLACE DU PONT NEUF A PARIS, with brass gnomon, biconvex burning glass on two limbs adjusted by milled screws the supporting quadrants both finely engraved with declination scale, the cannon of approx 15mm bore, the vent with slit for the fuse, the trunnions on swept supports, 28.5cm diam

Glass chipped, marble with 'flea bites' on edge but not chipped as such; not cracked. Much accretion of old dust and dirt over a very long period.
Complete, entirely original and totally unrestored
