The canvas shows a patch repair verso to the upper left quadrant of the image. Evidence of repair to the paint surface is visible in this area. Examination under UV shows this repair and evidence of possible later varnishing. The upper centre section shows a scuff to the paint surface which reveals several pinholes when lit from behind. This area is located just below the upper stretcher verso. There is a daub of white paint at the base of the tail of the cockerel - it is not clear if this was as the artist intended or a later edition. The frame is structurally sound but shows evidence of overpainting to the gilt finish and repair to the moulded details.
