More Information

George II (1727-60), Proof Guinea, 1727. First young laureate head left, legend GEORGIVS. II. DEI. GRATIA, toothed border around rim both sides, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, date either side of crown, legend M.B.F.ET.H. REX. F.D.B. ET.L.D.S.R.I.A.T.ET.E. edge plain, weight 8.40g (WR.70 (R4), Montagu-303, Murdoch-78, Douglas-Morris-41). Encapsulated by NGC as PF65.                        We believe this to be the Ex Douglas-Morris example. Sotheby, 26/11/1974. Lot 41 - £3,200. Although the quality of the picture in the Douglas-Morris Collection is not clear, you can see a small mark between the O and R of GEORGIVS. Also, not visible in the picture, the Douglas-Morris specimen had a flaw on the truncation.Although listed as R4 by Wilson and Rasmussen, after extensive research we can only find three different examples that have ever been auctioned. Only one other example has sold at auction in the last 20 years, an inferior Proof 64 realising £45,600 (inc. buyers premium) in 2017.
