A FIRST WORLD WAR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER GROUP OF FOUR TO THE ROYAL NAVY. A Great War group of four comprising George V Distinguished Service Medal, 1914-15 Star named to Lt Commr W H Darwall DSO R.N War and Victory Medals with Mentioned in Despatches oak leaf named to Commr W H Darwall R.N. William Henry Darwall was born on the 17th February 1881 at Dover, the son of Captain William Eveleigh Darwall R.N. He began his Naval career as a cadet at H.M.S. Britannia on the 15th July 1895. After a long and decorated service he moved to the Retired List on the 2nd July 1922 at the rank of Captain. He was recalled for service during the Second World War and retired for a second time on the 15th August 1940. His record is generally one of success being commended for his role in charge of such ships as H.M.S Handy, unfortunately whilst in charge of H.M.S. Falcon the vessel was grounded and he 'incurred the Admiralty's Displeasure at a hearing on the 12th February 1910. His D.S.O. was awarded in 1917 for his service 'In Vessels Employed On Patrol and Escort Duty during the period 1st January to 31st December 1917. His Service Record, aboard H.M.S. Primrose, a Flower Class Sloop states ''For continuous good service as Senior Officer of Escorts since June 1916. He has carried out his duties with marked zeal and when the conduct of the operations has called for initiative, he has shown sound judgement. As a senior Officer of Escorts he has proved himself capable and the keen interest displayed in his work has enabled him to give clear supports of the proceedings of the escorts and valuable suggestions for improvements. His work is deserving of special recognition.' The award was confirmed in the London Gazette on the 6th April 1918. Mounted for display with extensive copied research.
