AN IMPORTANT AXMINSTER HERALDIC CARPET
with a central armorial of the Medlycott family surmounted by a helm and a displayed eagle within a rococo mantling of leafy scrolls, the motto "DAT CVRA QVIETEM" in a pink ribbon below, the buff coloured field with borders incorporating leafy scroll work, blossoming branches and urns charged with summer flowers at intervals, including the corners, the outer ivory border with panels of flowering scrollwork and "C"-scrolls within an outer border woven to simulate gadrooning, 622cm x 591.8cm
Provenance: Originally conceived for the Great Hall at Ven House and removed to Sandford Orcas Manor in 1929. According to family tradition the carpet was made at Wilton on the Axminster looms about 1830 as a wedding present from the Reverend Bradford to his daughter and son-in-law Sir. W.C. Medlycott, the 2nd Baronet.
