A pair of English wet collodion positive photograph portraits, ambrotype, of Thomas Wayne and Mrs Thomas Wayne nee Coffin, 100 x 75mm including stamped gilt brass mount, embossed leather covered case
The Wayne family of industrialists owed its initial prosperity to the generosity of Richard Crawshay (1739-1810), Ironmaster of Cyfarthfa, Merthyr Tydfil, perhaps the most prominent 'iron king' of South Wales. Matthew Wayne (1780-1853) Crawshay's furnace manager, was enabled by his employer's bequest of £800 to gain his independence. Prosperity soon followed and his four sons, of which Thomas Wayne was the second, all further developed the family's industrial enterprises across South Wales. Thomas Wayne expanded the Gadlys iron works served as treasure of the Aberdare turnpike trust and was agent of the Canal Company. He also built St Elvan's church at Aberdare. He married, on 19 May 1840 Ann Coffin (1813-1867)
Excellent preservation slight wear to the exterior of the case and the two halves of the case now detached
