Ram Kumar, "Untitled", Oil on Board (1924-2018).
An early work by Ram Kumar, this oil on board painting showcases his signature abstract style with an interplay of earthy tones, deep greens, and layered textures. The composition presents a fragmented landscape with bold brushstrokes, evoking a sense of movement and depth. Signed in the lower left, the piece reflects Kumar's transition from figurative art to abstraction, a hallmark of his artistic evolution.
Ram Kumar (1924–2018) was one of India's most celebrated modernist painters, known for his evocative abstract landscapes and melancholic urban depictions. Initially trained as an economist, he shifted to painting after studying at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was influenced by the likes of Fernand Léger and André Lhote. His early works featured figurative compositions reflecting themes of social alienation and existential despair, but he later transitioned into abstraction, particularly inspired by the ghats of Varanasi and the vastness of nature. His textured canvases, often composed of muted tones and geometric forms, conveyed a deep emotional intensity, reflecting themes of solitude and introspection. A contemporary of artists like M.F. Husain and S.H. Raza, Ram Kumar played a crucial role in shaping India’s modern art movement. His legacy remains influential, with his works housed in major national and international collections.
