Irish Westmeath Rifles Regiment of Militia Victorian Officer helmet plate circa 1878-81. A good scarce die-stamped bronzed oval shamrock sprays surmounted by a crown resting on a blank tablet; centrally, a silvered Maltese cross bearing circlet WESTMEATH RIFLE REGIMENT surrounding strung bugle. Two of three loops to reverse. VGC Raised in 1793 at Mullingar as Westmeath Militia, redesigned Westmeath Rifles in 1855 and became 9th Bn. Rifle Brigade on Friday 1st July 1881.
