A good 12 bore Scottish flintlock sporting gun by William Heriot of Edinburgh, c 1775; 56" overall, barrel 40½”, the octagonal breech having gold touch hole, engraved WILLM. HERIOT EDINBURGH” in oblong panel, and with Scottish, presumably Edinburgh, gold lined proofs and maker’s poincon; plain flat stepped lock signed “W. Heriot” in script; plain walnut half stock with finely chequered wrist, horn fore end cap, plain steel mounts, the trigger guard with acanthus finial, and horn tipped wooden ramrod with steel worm.
