J. Steven Dews (b.1949), Lizzie R. Wilce, oil on canvas, signed, 41 x 61cm ARR
Built at Feock, Cornwall, England by John Stevens in 1876, she was a three masted schooner, 130 registered tons, official number 75155, registered at Falmouth and owned by Biggleston, Spray, Hayle, Cornwall in 1892. Engaged in the coasting trade between Cornwall and ports in the British Channel. By 1900 the "Lizzie R. Wilce" was owned by Mrs. E. Randell of Swansea, Wales.
On the 7th January 1908, when trying to enter St Ives harbour in a strong N W gale and heavy sea, on route from Swansea to St Malo with coal, she struck Pendolva Point and drove ashore on Porthminster Beach where she became a total wreck.
