WW1 CBE (Britannia) (Mil) neck badge (un-named as issued) and BWM to Col S. Paterson about extremely fine. Stanley Paterson's CBE was announced in the London Gazette dated 3rd June 1919. Sold with large folder of copied research including letters, LGs, service details, Orinoco Expedition etc. He was commissioned in HLI Militia 1878, 2nd Lieut in 91st Highlanders 1879, promoted Liet 1881, Capt 1886, Maj 1894, Lt Col 1903, Col 1907, 1912-19 he commanded Regt District No 2, retired 1919.
He commanded various Guards of Honour including Queen Victoria's visit to Greenock in 1892 to review the Militia, during which an officer's horse when spooked tried to jump the Queen's carriage and got stuck on the carriage. When no-one else moved to help, it was Paterson who managed to extricate the horse and rider from the carriage, for which Victoria invited him to dinner.
He commanded the 2nd Bn A&SH 1903-07 and served in South Africa, China and India, but missed out on all active service.
MIC confirms single award of BWM, also issued a Silver War Badge (this missing). He settled in Kenya after the war and was a member of FRGS and FRES, travelled and explored extensively in Venezuela, credited as being the first to discover and map the source of the Orinoco. He was speared through the leg by a tusk in Malaya while hunting elephant. The rank, name and initial on BWM is unique. (See photo) (½B)
