A large pair of Martin Brothers 'eagle and vulture' stoneware vases, dated 1878,
each decorated in ‘scratch blue’ with birds of prey in landscapes, the cylindrical neck decorated with repeating blue flower heads, on a fluted circular foot, incised mark ‘R W Martin London and Southall //12-1878 and numbered 128 & 129,58.5 cm high

The vase numbered 129 and decorated with two eagles has some slight blistering to the glaze on the shoulder and other minor glaze imperfections including a missing patch of blue glaze around the foot and there is a small chip to the rim otherwise in good condition. The vase numbered 128 has some most noticeable blistering to the glaze on the shoulder and part of the neck and other minor glaze imperfections. There is an indentation on the edge of the foot which is in the manufacture and not a splinter chip.
