A 1914-15 STAR TO A GALLIPOLI CASUALTY WITH THE SOUTH WALES BORDERERS. A 1914-15 Star named to 10417 Pte W.H. Smith S. Wales Bord. Born c. 1888 at Ripple, Worcestershire, Private Smith enlisted prior to the Second World War. He fought with the 2nd Battalion of the South Wales Borderers serving in China and participating in operations in Tsingtao. He was part of the Gallipoli landings on the 25th April 1915, landing at Y Beach with 'A' Company. The beach was evacuated on the 26th when Private William Harvey Smith was killed in action. He was probably killed during one of the attacks on the British defensive perimeter around the cliff top of the beach. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, he was 27 years old.
