A pair of Chinese blue and white armorial dishes in Japanese Kakiemon style, Qianlong period, c.1752, each painted to the centre with a tiger and bamboo, the petal lobed border reserved with pine, lion-dogs, dragons, bamboo and prunus, the underside with the arms of Walpole quarterly impaling Cavendish, in a rococo cartouche, within a scrollwork border, 27.8cm diameter, one dish repaired

cf. Howard, D. S., 'Chinese Armorial Porcelain', Vol. I, p. 585, Pl. R3, which states that this service was commissioned for Horatio Walpole who married Lady Rachel Cavendish in 1748.

The first dish has some glaze losses and shallow chips to the edge, one with a short stained crack and some splintering around the immediate area.
The second dish has been broken in half and has a rare 18th century European repair - it has been enamelled along the break and refired which has caused some black speckling and fritting to the underside, with worn repairers mark to the base also. Other chips/glaze losses to the edge and an additional crack to the border.
