Portrait of Major John Hale Bagden-Hale (1808-1864)
Oil on canvas
Of Bradley Court, Wootton under Edge, Glos. Commissioned Into 2nd Life Guards and, on purchasing his Majority, transferred to 3rd Light Dragoon’s and served with them in India. He commanded the regiment in the battles of Ferojeshah and Chillianwalla in the Sikh Wars (and was invalided home with acute piles!)

Oil on canvas cleaned and re-lined many years ago, canvas remains tight but paint is a little dirty with a fine but stable craquelure running throughout. No sign of any signature, housed in a later moulded gilt frame with original title plaque old inscribed label giving details of the sitter verso.
