Bust length portrait of a gentleman in 17th century dress,
Oil on canvas,
Unsigned,
53cm x 40cm,
Gilt framed
Note: The family inventory notes this as a 'Self portrait of an artist'
The paint surface shows fine craquelure throughout, with some small losses to the surface, particularly to the right side of the face and an area of repair in the lower right corner. There is evidence of historic repair to some areas, but there is no evidence of repair to the back of the canvas, suggesting it was re-lined at some point in the late 18th or early 19th century. The canvas weave is visible in some areas of the painting, most noticeably the beard. Examination under UV highlights the visible historic repairs, but shows no evidence of recent repairs or restoration. The frame shows losses to the moulded details and crude over-painting of the affected areas.
