** CHESTERFIELD (DERBYSHIRE) - EX PAROLE P.O.W. PREPAID 2s-0d RATE TO FRANCE VIA HAMBURG; 24 Apr. 1804 EL (slight edge wear and some internal staining) from POW "Delamare" (formerly Captain of the ship 'Amitie') to a merchant in Le Havre listing the goods that were sold (olive oil, sausages, gruyere, etc.) at Point a Pitre and that were lost (cotton, coffee etc.) with his vessel when it was captured near Haiti. It was posted prepaid in "CHESTERFIELD" (boxed mileage mark) endorsed "Recd. Inland & Foreign Post... 2s." in red, routed via London (mainly v. fine oval "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR") and then Hamburg (faint h.s. "R.4" on the front) being charged "18" (decimes) on delivery. Rare routing for POW mail to France.
