George Evans (British, fl. mid-19th century) Portrait of Mr Lawrence Heyworth, 1843 signed and dated lower right oil on canvas 126 x 98cm. Lawrence Heyworth was a Lancashire-born merchant who later served as MP for Derby, and who was best-known for fighting against the bread tax. A bill inscribed 'bread tax' is visible in the present portrait. This portrait is closely related to the picture George Evans exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1842, which depicted a different MP, George Thompson, in similar setting and pose. An engraving of this image is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery
