£2,400
ATTRIBUTED TO EDWARD MATTHEW WARD, RA (1816-1879) - 'Dr. Johnson perusing the manuscript of the Vicar of Wakefield, as the last resource for rescuing Goldsmith from the hands of the bailiffs', oil on canvas, bears signature and date 1859, framed, 63.5cm x 76.5cm, frame size 77cm x 90cm.
NB: Ward's original painting of this subject was exhibited at the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1843. It was much admired and several versions were made, of which at least one was unequivocally painted by Ward commissioned by John Montefiore. Other versions at The Sudley House Art Gallery, Liverpool , Dr Johnson's House, London and Johnson's Birthplace Museum in Lichfield have been described as 'Attributed to' or 'After Ward' however extensive research by the current vendors has concluded it is highly probable that this lot is the same work that was commissioned by Montefiore.
