Star Lot: A stunning large original oil on canvas painting of a young girl collecting water by the 19th century artist John Ritchie, monogrammed bottom left. This work was painted between 1858-1875 and has recently undergone restoration and re-varnishing. Rehoused in a newer frame. Mm: 70 x 63 cm (in frame).
John Ritchie was one of the committed of followers of the PRB who worked in the sphere which orbited the small group of artists at its core. His work is comparable with that of William Dyce in the late 1850s and early 1860s, with the same clarity of lighting, bright colouring and superb rendering of natural detail. His works were great depictions of contemporary Victorian life, the attention to detail and range of expressions are typical of the artist. His works sell up to the thousands at auction.
