A FIRST WORLD WAR PAIR AND CASUALTY TRIO TO THE SHINNIE FAMILY. A Great War pair comprising War Medal and Victory Medal named to 69432 Rflm N.T. Shinnie N.Z.E.F. And a Trio with 1914-15 Star named to S. Lt H.F.C. Shinnie R.N.R. War and Victory Medals similarly named. Herbert Forsyth Craig Shinnie was born at Aberdeen on the 21st July 1892, Midshipman in the Royal Navy on the 1st April 1911 having spent much time on the S.S. Aberlouor. He died on the 1st January 1915 when his ship H.M.S. Formidable was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel. A record of his actions in the tragedy was given by a colleague 'I had no time to exchange words with my officers, but Sub-Lieutenant Shinnie super-intended the lowering of the quarterdeck boats and ordered Petty Officers to take charge of them, as they were mostly married men. He remained perfectly cool and calm to the very end and when the order came from the Captain to look out for ourselves the Sub-Lieutenant went to see that each of the men near him had something that would float and that they could hang on to. As far as I know he went down with the ship'. Norman Taylor Shinnie served from the 17th October 1917 until discharged on the 27th May 1919. Mounted for display with copied research.
