A FRAMED EMBROIDERED CHINESE MANDARIN SQUARE RANK BADGE, circa 19th century / Qing period, embroidered with gilt thread on a dark silk background a central bird stands upon waves surrounded by various symbols and a bright gold sun to the top left. The Chinese tradition of wearing rank badges (Buzi), also known as Mandarin Squares to demonstrate civil, military or imperial rank began in 1391 during the Ming Dynasty and continued throughout the Qing Dynasty up until 1911. A badge featuring a bird (such as our one shown here) identified the wearer as a civil official. Condition: over all condition of the piece is very good; there is some loss and loosening to the threads/background silk, also a little faded; but does not take from the piece which is very beautiful. Dimensions: 29 x 29cm, frame (unglazed): 45 x 45cm.
