Valentine Bartholomew (British 1799-1879) - Still life of Azealas in a vase - Watercolour - 41.5 x 34cm - Signed lower right and dated 1843 - Inscribed on a label on the reverse ' Azalea's by Valentine Bartholomew Flower painter in ordinary to her Majesty and her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent 23 Charlotte St Portland Place' and 'Azalea's ! with your graceful forms The heritage of noble birth ye were not incant to brave the storms which blight the common flowers of the earth. Ye are more beautiful than they yet no fond memories round you cling to breathe upon the hearts decay The freshness of our early spring ye in your pride of bowen (?) and hall I have never met our childhoods gaze ye cannot with a spell recall the joyous thoughts of bygone days your varied hues and foliage green the painter may well idolize but wilder flowers have ever been more sacred in the Poets eyes by Mrs Valentine Bartholomew April 1843'
