Charles I (1625-1649), AR Halfcrown 1645, Uncertain (Hereford?) mint, mm : Lis. King on horseback left over grassy ground, rev . Crowned and supported royal arms within Garter, date below, crowned CR either side of crown. 14.59gm. (Brooker 1180; N. 2359; S. 2915), Good Very Fine, slightly weak in parts but much better than S plate coin. Although having a pale gilt appearance (as usual for this very rare issue) XRF tests indicates a silver fineness of approximately 89.5%, only a little less fine than sterling. The coin also contains just under 1% gold which might explain the yellowness of colour – the reason for which may well be the inclusion of silver-gilt plate and flatware etc. melted down to form flans for coining . Excessively rare ‘RRR’. Ex. Dr. French Col.
