Friedl Dicker-Brandeis (1898-1944), Austrian, “Prague Malá Strana“, pastel, 37 x 53 cm.
[Frederika "Friedl" was born in Vienna on 30th July 1898 and married Pavel Brandeis in 1936 and afterwards used the hyphenated surname. A student of Johannes Itten at his private school, she followed him to study and teach at the Weimar Bauhaus. She was involved in textile design, printmaking, bookbinding and typography from 1919-23. After leaving, she worked as an artist and textile designer in Berlin, Prague and Hronov. On 17th September 1942 she and her, partner husband were transported to Terezin concentration camp and in September 1944, were transported to Auschwitz where she was murdered on 9th October].
