The Lotus flower is considered one of the most sacred plants in the world and is of symbolic value for many Eastern cultures as the flower most representative of the promise of rebirth and spiritual enlightenment. Rooted in mud, the flower submerges every night yet blossoms again in full beauty each morning. It also signifies the present, past and future as the same plant often bears buds, flowers and seeds simultaneously. In Buddhist tradition, the Buddha appeared atop a floating lotus, and his first footsteps as an enlightened being left lotus blossoms in his wake. Given the significance of the lotus in Buddhism it is not surprising that lotus jars are often excavated from Buddhist sites.
