Born in Armagh, John Skelton began painting professionally in London, being associated with the Euston Road School who emphasised realism, hoping to connect to a working class audience. He moved to Dublin in 1950, working as an art director and illustrator of books, before painting full time from 1975. Reoccurring themes for Skelton were west of Ireland fishing and equestrian scenes, having the narrative driven sensibility of an illustrator. He exhibited with the RHA and the Watercolour Society in Dublin. Skelton also worked as a lecturer with NCAD. His works have featured in a number of public collections.
