An historically interesting Indian Tulwar, plain blade 32", the iron hilt decorated overall with silver leaves, a silver plate set into the pommel disc finely engraved "This sword was taken on Tantia Topee when Captured 8th April 1859", and "Presented to Earl Canning G.C.B. by Major R.I. Meade". GC, the hilt worn and patinated, presumably from many years of use. Ex Harewood Collection, sold through Christies auction rooms c 1985-6. Note: Tantia Tope was a prominent leader against British forces during the Indian Mutiny and was present at Kanpur (Cawnpore) when Nana Sahib's force massacred the British Colony. £600-800
