A highly unusual early 19th century oak armchair with a remarkable solid ‘riven' back, English, 1810-30

The thick, heavy, one-piece back, hollowed out slightly above the seat to allow for a padded back, with serpentine shaped cresting extending to shaped sides above the outplayed and exaggerated scroll-ended open arms, on incurved front supports, drop-in padded seat, and sabre front legs, the back board extending to an arched cut-away support, the rear of the back left natural to show the gnarled quality of the timber, 53cm wide, 93cm high, 52cm deep, seat height 48cm
