DECORATIVE PRINTED ADVERTISING ENVELOPE SENT FROM EDINBURGH PRINTSELLER "HUGH PATON"; Fine 23 Mar. 1843 E prepaid "2[d]" (red crayon) in cash from Edinburgh to a "Writer" (Scots work for solicitor at this date) in Ayr; but it was also prepaid an extra 1d Late Fee with a mainly fine red boxed Edinburgh "PAID/1d EXTRA" on the front (slightly overlapped by the red "PAID at EDINR." cds). There is a most attractive fancy frame printed around the edges of the address panel which is very reminiscent of the famous Buchanan envelopes of 1840; Buchanan was a solicitor and only used his designs for business mail too. It may have been inspired by the 1840 'Post Magazine' design too. The contents are a printed list of books & prints available from Paton and are headed by an attractive coat-of-arms design. This kind of decorative commercial cover is very rare before 1850. Exhibition Item. [Illustrated in BPPP, p.343.]Cross Reference: PICTORIALS, PRINTED, ADVERTISING COVERS, SCOTLAND, LATE FEE/TOO LATE MAIL
