Letter written by 7709 Corporal William Angus VC of the 8th Battalion Highland Light Infantry which reads 'Wounded at Givenchy - France on the 12th of June 1915, I received my wounds while brining a wounded officer back to a place of safety. The officers who led a bombing raid on the enemy trenches the previous night was blown up with a mine, which the enemy sprung upon the party and forced them to retire leaving their wounded leader lying very close to the enemy lines. At 2 o'clock pm on the 12th inst I left our own trench and crawled out to his assistance. I managed to reach him without being seen by the enemy but when getting him back to our lines we were spotted and fired upon with the result that we were both badly hit, Sincerely Your Wm Angus Stobhill Hospital 24/8/16', 20cm x 16cm.
