Fine early Sawos Flute Stopper with Crocodile and Hornbill bird, Papua New Guinea. Carved and engraved hardwood with shell eyes. Finely carved with a crocodile raising from the flute insert to a bird’s head that fluidly curves back down to the crocodile. Encrusted with a darkened patina consistent with age and use within the culture. Early-Mid 20th., century. Approx L57cm. PROVENANCE John Magers Collection, Sydney.
