Victoria Cross winner's Town Council of Kirkcaldy Memorial Tribute Scroll "This Token of Honour in recognition of the Great and Glorious Spirit, Ardour and Bravery of 18274 L. Corporal Robert Dunsire V.C. 13th Royal Scots who laid down his life on the altar of patriotism for King and Country on the 26th day of January 1916." The inscription is set within a coloured printed frame and also includes a list of the Allied Powers and the dates they joined the war. The scroll is set within an old wood and glass frame. There is some minor discolouration but looks good very fine or better.
His VC was awarded for the 2nd day of the Battle of Loos and announced in the London Gazette dated 18th November 1915 "For most conspicuous bravery on Hill 70 on 26th September 1915. Private Dunsire went out under very heavy fire and rescued a wounded man from between the firing lines. Later when another man considerably nearer the German lines was heard shouting for help, he crawled out again with utter disregard to the enemy's fire and carried him in also. Shortly afterwards the Germans attacked over this ground."
With copied CWGC, LG, Soldiers Died etc, he was born in Buckhaven 26/11/99, enlisted 6/1/15, a comrade wrote "He took over the position I had and was wounded not long after we left the firing line; he knew he was dying, and told me not to bother about him." The records show he was killed in action on 30th January 1916 (not 26th as per the scroll) and is buried in Mazingarbe Communal Cemetery, which has 108 military burials. His VC is in the Royal Scots Museum, Edinburgh. BUYER MUST COLLECT. (See photo) (Frame, 58cm x 41cm x 2cm)
