£7,800
Fine pair of cast silver candelabra after designs by Paul de Lamerie, maker C J Vander Ltd, 1961, having four S-shaped acanthus capped branches with waisted sconce over drip pans, over a finely chased tapered square section column capped with scallops over a domed and canted square foot embellished with further scallops and scrolling forms, height 47cm, width at the top 31cm, gross weight approx. 7.6kg
NB: These candelabra are faithful reproductions of those produced by the famous Huguenot silversmith Paul de Lamerie for Sir Robert Walpole, First Earl of Orford, 1676-1745, produced around 1731-32, the originals are engraved with his crest and the motto of the Order of the Garter, which is not represented on this pair. They were later acquired by a celebrated collector of Huguenot silver, Lord Swaythling, and as such are known as the 'Swaythling candelabra'
We can find no major issues with these sticks, but being hyper-critical there is a little bit of play within the upper part as it sits in the central sconce. One of the sticks, in our view, does have a very slight lean and almost seems to correct itself within the upper sconce. This is very subtle, otherwise the sticks are in almost untouched conditon.
The hallmarks are clear throughout
