Awarded to Lieutenant Colonel James Clare Macnamara Canny CBE., DSO, who was awarded the DSO for gallantry during the Boer War and during the Great War and operations on the North West Frontier with the Army Service Corps. (Both QSA., KSA in the correct engraved style), 1914 Mons Star and Clasp CAPT J.C M. CANNY DSO A.S.C. British War Medal, Victory Medal, MID Oak Leaf, BT LT. COL, India General Service Medal, clasp Waziristan 1921-24 BT L.CO. J.C.M. CANNY RASC. The group remains mounted by Spink and Son Ltd court style as originally worn Distinguished Service Order London Gazette, 27 September 1901 In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa. Lieutenant Colonel James Clare Macnamara Canny CBE., DSO was born in 1877 and was commissioned into the Royal Munster Fusiliers in May 1899. Embarking to South Africa he served as Station Staff Officer, taking part in operations in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, the action at Rhenoster Kop; operations in Orange River Colony, Bethlehem and Wittebergen. He was mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette, 10 September 1901 and 25 April, 1902). He was promoted to Lieutenant 7 July 1901 and served as Adjutant, Royal Munster Fusiliers from the 9 February 1907 to 15 September 1908. He was promoted Captain in the Royal Munster Fusiliers on the 13 June 1908. Later that year he appears to have transferred to the Army Service Corps on the 23 September 1908. At the outbreak of the Great War he landed in France on the 17th October 1914, earning the 1914 Star and clasp. He was promoted Temporary Lieutenant Colonel 8 April, 1915 and was mentioned in Despatches and given the Brevet of Lieutenant Colonel 1 January 1918. He was appointed Assistant Director of Transport for the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force from 19 March, 1918 and was created a CBE in 1919. He died in 1942
