SUPERB BLACK & GOLD PRINTED DECORATIVE ENVELOPE WITH 1d RED TIED BY DISTINCTIVE DUBLIN MX; Extraordinary and colourful 16 Feb. 1842 decorative envelope used from Dublin to "Mary-Borough" with 1841 1d Red (OI; plate 29, very near 4m) tied by a very fine Distinctive Dublin Maltese Cross and by the partly fine "MARYBOROUGH" double-arcs arrival cds; there is a fine red Dublin diamond d.s. on the reverse. The all-over design of fancy gold/black floral motifs covers both the back & front of the envelope and there is a man in period dress on the front and a matching female figure on the flap. Was this a belated Valentine letter? One of only a handful of recorded 1840s stamped covers with gold decorative designs. Ideal Exhibition Item for any Irish, 1d Reds or Cancellations collection.
