A RARE MEDIEVAL 15TH CENTURY OOLITIC FOSSIL LIMESTONE GRIFFIN HEAD, ENGLISH, CIRCA 1400-1450. The scaled head and neck with swept back ears and open beak with protruding tongue, 24cm wide and 34cm high with stand. The Griffin, a half Eagle, half Lion mythological creature was a highly esteemed symbol of strength, courage and protection from the earliest of times, reaching particular prominence in the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods.
