The Christopher Hawkings Collection of Curiosities - Introduction by Michael Cowley – Former Director Phillips Auctioneers This unique and interesting collection of unusual objects was formed by Christopher Hawkings, an eminent and highly respected third generation auctioneer who, along with Christopher Weston, was the co-owner of Philips Son and Neale in London’s Bond Street, later to become Phillips International Auctioneers. From his original office in the so called ‘Yellow Room’, he presided over the Furniture and Works of Art Department and initiated other new departments at the time, including Art Nouveau and Scientific Instruments, before passing them on to the younger colleagues. His extensive knowledge and widespread interest in the objects was matched by his concern for people. He willingly gave his time, not only to give talks about the collection at Phillips evening receptions, but principally in fund raising, notably with the BBC’s Blue Peter, where he held an annual auction. He was also a great supporter of the RNLI.
