Georges Mazilu is a Romanian born artist who works predominantly in oil on canvas. His paintings often contain an anthropomorphic and supernatural element, specifically concentrating on the abstraction of the human and animal form. Mazilu reimagines the human form by displaying his subjects through a fantastical lens.
Stylistically, Mazilu displays a comprehensive understanding of chiaroscuro, through his technical treatment of shade and light. This use of shadows resonates with the old renaissance painters such as Breugel, Da Vinci and Caravaggio.
‘A Study of The Judgment of Venus’ illustrates Mazilu’s interest in mythologies and fantastical places. He references Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, a painting which tells the story of the birth of the Roman goddess from the ocean. Mazilu’s work often contains a highly sexualised element, this is suggested by the depiction of Venus (the subject) and the four figures that gaze at her naked body. The pastel marks used within this work create a unique texture which contributes to Mazilu’s whimsical atmosphere as the figure seems to be emerge from the textured background. The mark-making and texture created by Mazilu resembles that of a mist, enhancing Mazilu’s whimsical style.
